What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!!

It’s that time again. I actually have something new this week. And I am not reading just one book. Come on, you didn’t think I could last that long reading just one book at a time did you?

Let’s jump right in!

Artifacts, Dragons, and other Lethal Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge
29816822

I love love love this series. I love the main character and all the hot guys she has in her life. I love that she owns a bakery and kicks butt. I love everything about this series. It is also feeding the deep dark void that was left when Kim Harrison finished her Hallows Series. Now I have this, and Jade, and cupcakes!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
17675462

I have been known to avoid a series of books just because of the hype. I avoided this one for that reason and now I am asking myself “Why, why, why?!” So far it has been such an amazing story and I can’t get enough of it!

Undercurrent by Paul Blackwell
16065498

I don’t have much to say about this one yet. I haven’t been reading it as much as the other two books. I can’t help it, I love the other books so much they have consumed me. But so far Undercurrent has been interesting and I am hoping it gets a little bit more fast paced than what it is. Okay, so I got a little bored with it! But I am just at the beginning. I will at least give it to half way before I give up on it.

That is all I have for this week. I am hoping to finish all these books this week. Which is very likely. I am almost done with The Raven Boys and almost at the half way point with Artifacts, Dragons, and other Lethal Magic. If I had any days off this week (I do but it’s later in the week) I would for sure finish them.

So, what are you reading?

Genre: Urban Fantasy

First Line: With One hand on the invisible knife at my hip and one hand twined through the wedding ring charms on my necklace, I stepped out from the golden magic of the portal onto the shores of Lock More.

Blurb from Goodreads: I hadn’t set foot in the human world for more than a few hours in over three and a half months. Sure, I was stronger and faster than I’d ever been before, and I had a shiny new sword, but I was seriously chocolate deprived. I don’t recommend quitting cold turkey. And the new sword was a problem — to my mind, anyway. It represented all the expectations of a powerful father and a new otherworldly life. A life that wasn’t the one I’d worked so hard to build. It also represented the responsibility I had to bring my foster sister Sienna to … what? Justice? I didn’t know if that was even possible. What I did know was that Sienna wouldn’t stop, and that I couldn’t just leave everything up to fate and destiny … or maybe I was. Maybe I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. If you believed in that sort of thing.
I just hoped that before the chaos and mayhem renewed, I’d manage to get my hands on some chocolate. It didn’t even have to be single-origin Madagascar. I was utterly prepared to lower my standards.

Cover: Another cover that just…it’s so simple and intriguing. Seriously, these books would look good on any bookshelf.

Review

This book is another three months after the second book. The last book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Jade stuck in the Nexus, learning who her father was, and leaving her friends and family behind having no idea what had happened to them. During the three months she has been able to call home, but she hides in the Nexus to avoid a prediction a Seer showed her.

She has left the Nexus because she is on a mission. The last time she saw her sister, Sienna, she had gone full black witch, summoning demons and sacrificing whoever she needed to accomplish her feat.

As she comes out of the Nexus she finds that a young Dragon, Drake, has followed her and refuses to go back. She also finds her best friend, Kandy, and the vampire Kett. They gather to start tracking down Sienna and stop whatever it is she is trying to do. Which soon they find that she is trying to summon demons with more sacrificing.

Jade now knows that there is no saving her sister, she has been lost to the darkness. Jade feels it is her fault and her job to destroy the evil her sister has become.

There are many close calls and Jade finds herself being dragged deeper and deeper into a sadness that has consumed her soul.

Here is what I just don’t understand. How does Jade even begin to think that all of this is her fault? If anything, it’s her grandmothers fault from keeping Jade and Sienna away from the magic they could have and learn. Of course, I feel like Sienna would still turn out to be a black witch because she would still want the power that Jade has.

**WARNING: SPOILERS!**

The ending…let us talk about the ending.

I am still a little…emotional at the ending. Jade has defeated the black witch. She has done what she set out to do, with the help of many, many supporters, but she finds she cannot kill the person who she used to be so close to. Then Desmond takes it upon himself and takes care of it for her. And Jade gets mad at him!! In all honesty, killing Sienna was doing her a favor because the pain she was going to suffer for what she had done would had been a fate worse than death. And did Jade not ask Kett to do it for her if she couldn’t? Would she had been mad at the vampire if he had done it? Every person in the final battle had right to want the black witch dead, no matter if she still had her magic or not! So really, Jade should have been thanking Desmond for doing something she couldn’t bring herself to.

Then, when Jade pushed Desmond away…I about flipped!!

Okay, let me get something straight right now. I will NEVER stop being a supporter of Jade and Desmond! There was just so much chemistry and passion between those two.

**SPOILERS OVER**

Aside from the disappointment in some things with the ending, I am happy with this novel. It was fantastic and another book that kept me reading from beginning to end. I jumped right into the 4th book after this one. I just can’t stop myself!

April Wrap-Up

Monthly Wrap up and Haul Image

Hello Friends! I know what you are thinking, “Where is the short story??”

See here is the thing…I haven’t written it yet. I thought I was going to have time and I got called into work. Ugh! This makes three weeks in a row that my two days off have been interrupted. I get two days off, but they are not back to back like they have been scheduled. It’s annoying…but that is life in retail management.

So, instead of getting a short story today (it will come later this week, promise) I wanted to go ahead and do my April wrap up. I am not doing a book haul today, but that will come up this week as well.

Moving on!

April Books

My favorite book this month was Changes by Jim Butcher. It was a fantastic book! My lease favorite was The Legendary Haunting of Quentin Wallis. Nothing wrong with it, it just seemed to drag on. The story was cute though. Also, the author did an interview with me so…I liked it for that fact to. lol

I also listened to Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

April Audio

Which again I will say, this book is really up there on the creep factor. I loved it.

I think I did pretty good reading 6 books this month. Though, Waylaid by Kim Harrison was actually a short story, but I am still counting it! I hope to do better in May and get a little more reading done. That is if I can stop just laying around on my days off. I need to find a better place to read during the day. I usually lay in bed to read, even during the day, which causes me to get sleepy. I need to stop that.

What did you read in April? What was your favorite and least favorite book?

First Line: Fully aware that the vampire was watching me from somewhere deeper in the woods, I placed my second to last piece of single-origin Madagascar chocolate on my tongue and lovingly sucked on it.

Blurb from Goodreads: Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.
Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

Cover: I love the covers of all of these books. Especially the cupcake.

Review: This book takes place three months after the first book ended. Jade is coming to terms with her newly discovered powers, struggling to figure out what her other half is and trying to deal with what her sister had done and getting used to no longer having Sienna around.

Of course, there are some upsides to what she went through a few months back. She know has a little group of supernatural beings at her back. Kandy the werewolf, Kett the Vampire, and Desmond, Kandy’s pack alpha. Also, her mother seems to be sticking around unlike the times before. And let’s not forget that she still has her bakery where she continues to bake delicious cupcakes.

In the first book I felt the connection between Jade and McGrowly…I mean Desmond. I was hoping to touch on it in this book and OMG did we see a lot. The chemistry between those two is so amazing and I was so distraught when the book ended and there was no closure between the two. So of course, it was the first thing I hope to see in the third book.

The friendship that develops between Kandy and Jade in this book gives me serious friendship goals, and please forgive me for using the term friendship goals.

From the skinwalkers at the beginning to the showdown between the big bad black witch and her sorcerer…this book was amazing and I couldn’t stop reading it. I would go to work thinking about the book and having a hard time getting through the day because I couldn’t read.

Just…the spark between Desmond and Jade…I love it so much and I want more of them!

We also meet Rusty’s little sister, Mory, in this book. She is an angry teenager who wants revenge for her brother and just to see him one more time. She is a Necromancer so she has the ability to see the spirits of the dead and she shows up demanding that Jade take her to the place where Rusty died. I feel like this is the beginning of trouble for Jade. This is where it all starts.

My favorite parts of this novel may have been the moments with Jade and Desmond…but also seeing Jade come into her powers and really start to learn how to use them. And in the end she finally finds some answers she has been looking for and it leaves you with your jaw hanging open.

The ending had me scrambling for the next book because I just couldn’t leave it like that. I hate a cliff hanger, but I also love them. There is a true ending to this novel, which I appreciate more than you can imagine. I have been burned by too many books with horrible endings, but this one had a good ending and a wonderful cliffhanger to make you beg for more.

I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

Hello friends. Happy Monday. It’s a rough Monday for me. I had to go into work at 5am to 10:30, and now I am about to head back in from 4 to 9:30 pm. And I am just too tired. I hate working split shifts but I never say no to them.

Anyways, let us move on! What are you reading this week?

I just started a new audio book and I am super excited to be reading it!

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King.
18775247

I am only in chapter 3 and I am already just like…”OMG! Are you serious?” I love Stephen King

I am reading…

Maps, Artifacts, and other Arcane Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge
25796232

It’s the last book currently available for the series. I’m a little worried about not having another one to go to after I am finished. But the author does have another series so I may give that a try after this one.

Changes by Jim Butcher
6585201

I know what you are thinking, “Heather, why are you still reading this one?!” But I have been so captured by the Dowser series (mentioned above) that I have been letting Mr. Dresden fall to the waste side. I am so sorry Harry!!

My GoodReads “Currently-Reading” List has one more book, but I am not actively reading it and I am not so sure I want to continue reading it. I just haven’t decided yet. And I have one book that I seriously need to start reading soon so I can have it done and ready for this months author interview. Ugh, I’m falling behind already.

Also, be very proud that none of these are YA!! I had to take a break from the YA world!

Hello friends and happy Monday! Shockingly I got the day off work. This NEVER happens on a Monday due to it being truck day. But sadly, I don’t get another day off until Saturday so my day off is spent getting things ready for my blog this week. Of course, that isn’t a bad thing because this is a hobby that I love to do.

Let’s get this party started!

This week I am reading three books and listening to one. I am trying to get last minute books in to up my count for this month. I know, it’s not a race and as long as we are reading it doesn’t matter how many books we read…but when you have already bought 11 books in a month you kind of have to pick up the speed as to counter balance the TBR list…right?

Changes by Jim Butcher

6585201

I am on page 183/438. I need to pick up the pace, though I am reading it quicker than usual. This so far is my favorite book in the Dresden files series. I feel like we are seeing a new side to Dresden that I knew was there, but have yet to see. It has furthered my crush on Dresden.

Shadows, Maps, and Other Ancient Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge

24894078

This is the 4th book in the Dowser series and I just can’t stop! I am in love with this series and I want more. Though, I debated last night if I wanted to start this one. Jade is made at Desmond and I really wanted something to happen between those two. The chemistry between them is amazing and ugh…I need Jade to fall madly in love with McGrowly and never look back. Sadly, I have already looked at a few reviews for this one because of the way the 3rd book ended and it looks like Desmond doesn’t even stand a chance with Jade and there is a new love interest and I am not okay with it, unless it was the vampire! Come on Meghan! I need McGrowly or the vampire to win Jades heart!

Sorry, the wound it still fresh from the 3rd book…

The Reflections of Queen Snow White by David Meredith

18780192

I was contacted by the author of this novel and he asked if I would review it. It sounded really interesting so I said I would give it a go. Normally, I would not have picked up this book at all. Mainly because the cover. I just don’t like it and I can’t really explain why. But I do love a fairy tale story and this one is obviously about Snow White and..Charming is dead! I started this one last night and I am still not so sure I am going to like it. I will continue reading, obviously, because I hold hope for all books. They are all a work of art and at least one person has poured their heart into the story. So far though…not to thrilled with it.

Lastly, what I am listening to.

The Game of Lives by James Dashner

23257464

I am in the last 30 minutes of this book. It has been so good and this book has been one joy ride of emotions. I am telling you, this series may be better than the Maze Runner series. I can’t wait to finish this, though I have a feeling I know part of how it will end.

Week GoalThis week I want to finish all the books above. Really bump up that book count. I am already 4 books ahead of schedule. I am making a little cushion for when Christmas gets here I guess.

I would like to start reading Serafina and the Black Cloak by Rober Beatty

23507745

And The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter

476543

That is all I am going to challenge myself to this week. It’s going to be a busy week.

I have two questions for you today.

  1. What are you reading?
  2. Do you start on a book as soon as you finish one or do you give yourself a break between books?

First Line: The vampire stood at the door to my bakery.

Blurb from Goodreads: If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it.

That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

Review

To be honest, the blurb doesn’t do this book justice. I bought this book because of my love for Felicia Day and her book club on Goodreads called Vaginal Fantasy Book Club. Funny, I started reading the book the day of their live chat about the book.

I actually thought this was going to be some dirty romance novel. I guess my idea of what the book club was about was a little off. Forgive me.

I loved this book though. I knew there would be werewolves in it because of the blurb. But then there is a vampire! Seriously, you throw in a vampire and I am sold. I just love vampires.

On to the book…

This book was fun to read. Jade is such a lovely character. She loves to bake (me too!) and owns a cupcake shop. This is like my dream…so it was super easy for me to slip into this book and really get sucked in.

There isn’t much that I can say without giving away spoilers, but I will say, I am so annoyed that we still don’t know what Jade is. She is half witch and half what? I need to know!

Overall, I read this in just a few days because it was just so great. The story was fast paced, and didn’t linger on useless details. There was just a little hint of a romance…that didn’t go over well…and lots of mystery. Was the twist ending obvious?? Yeah, it kind of was, but I still appreciated the twist.

As soon as I finished this book I bought the next book. I haven’t read it yet, but I am excited to get into it.

I enjoyed this book, even with all the bad reviews, I still enjoyed the book. It did put me in the mind of the True Blood series, but there were cupcakes and I am okay with this. Reading is what you do for fun. I had fun reading this book and would probably read it again one day.

The cover though…the cover could use a little more creativity, but you can’t go wrong with cupcakes…

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Late post today. I sort of forgot that I was working so late today and didn’t prepare my blog ahead of time like I usually do. Silly me. It’s all good though, readers never stop reading!

I just started reading Changes by Jim Butcher. It is the 12th book in the Dresden Files

6585201

I am in love with this series. I have been slowly making my way through the series to kind of drag it out a little bit.

I am also reading Trinkets, Treasures, and other Bloody magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge.

22059099

This is the second book in the Dowser series. Another series that I am currently obsessed with. I have been reading this while at work, so it’s been slow going, but I am almost to the end and plan on finishing this tonight.

I am listening to The Game of Lives by James Dashner

23257464

This is the third and possibly final book in the Mortality Doctrine series. Again, in love! I just love the whole virtual reality aspect of it.

Week Goal

Of course, my goal is to finish Changes as well as Trinkets. I would like to start on another Gena Showalter novel. I have only read her YA novels and I want to look into her more adult novels. If they are as good as her YA novels I may have another favorite author to add to my list. I have The Darkest Night on my night stand right now, waiting to be read first.

476543

This is the first book of the Lords of the Underworld series. My best friend turned me to these books. She said they were a lot like The Black Dagger Brotherhood books that I love.

I also have Serafina and the Black Cloak sitting on my immediate TBR pile.

23507745

I went to a book signing and bought this book. Got it signed and even got a picture with the author. I have been putting it off for a while now. I figured it was time to actually read it.

That is all that is on my TBR for this week. As we all know my week goals never happen and sometimes I am craving a book and I have to put the other books on hold. But at least I have a plan!

What are you reading?

What are You Reading?

What are you reading

Happy Monday friends! Yeah, I know, it’s never that great of a day, but the great thing about it is that we have new books to read!

This week I am reading:

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

23174274

I will hopefully finish this book this week. It is my plan anyways. I am only 100 pages away. I know, I am reading super slow, but I was reading a book for my author interview and had to put this one on the back burner for a little bit while I finished that one.

I am also reading Trinkets, Treasures, and other Bloody Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge

22059099

This is the second book in the Dowser series that I read last month. I have not been able to stop thinking about it. Is that strange?

I am listening to:

The Game of Lives by James Dashner

23257464

This is the third and final book in the Mortality Doctrine series. I am loving this whole series and hope that James Dashner wraps it up nicely. And actually, I am hoping this is the last in the series. It was only published last year, so Dashner could suprise us all with another book in the series. I will let you know if it sounds final once I reach the end of it.

Week Goal

Once I finish Glass Sword I plan on starting Firstlife by Gena Showalter. Seriously, I am dying to read this book. I have been looking for a book that will keep me up at night reading. The kind of book that grips my soul and won’t let go. Gena Showalter’s The White Rabbit Chronicles did that to me, so I have high hopes for this one as well.

25785357

I also hope to get to Cogling by Jordan Elizabeth Mierek this week. If I read Trinkets, Treasures, and other Bloody Magic as fast as I did the first in the series, I am sure to make it to Cogling as well this week.

25375990

What are you reading this week?
