Blurb from Goodreads: After her father’s funeral, Zoe and her mother moved to the Big City to start over. But life’s not so easy, the money is tight, and a new school brings trials. Fortunately, she has an escape: her dreams. A world of freedom and solace removed from the loneliness and anxieties of real life, Zoe’s dreamscape offers another, more precious, gift: It is the only place where she can spend time with her closest companion — her lost brother Valentine.

Yet something is very wrong. An unfamiliar — and uninvited — presence has entered her private realm to threaten Zoe and Valentine, a disturbing turn of events that is compounded by an impossible discovery. A chance encounter at a used record store where the grooves of the vinyl discs hold not music, but lost souls, has opened up a portal to the world of the restless dead. Now, the shop’s strange proprietor is offering Zoe the chance to commune with the father whose passing took a piece of her heart. The price? A lock of hair. Then a tooth. Then…

How far into this eerie world will Zoe go to discover what she truly needs? And once she does, will there be enough left of her to come back?

First Line: For three straight nights Zoe dreamed about the black dog.

The  cover is what caught my attention in the first place. It reminded me of Wizard of Oz as does the story itself.

Zoe is your typical teenager. Her father has passed away and his death has forced Zoe and her mother to move out of a nice home and into a small apartment in a not so safe town. New school, new town, new life, and Zoe and her mom are not getting along.

I loved this book for its simplicity of the beginning. There is a tragic beginning, but it is down played by the fact that there is also a new town and the teenager, Zoe, is just mad at the world. She finds a place that calls to her, a place that she thinks will help her find some piece and it is in a off the wall music store that sells records. But there is a catch, because some of these records hold the souls of the dead and one of them happens to be Zoe’s father.

This leads Zoe into an adventure and the discovery of a world beyond the living.

I started reading this book thinking that the story was going to go one way, and getting mad that I had already figured out part of it. Then the story took a completely different route and threw me off. It was fantastic and fresh.

Zoe was such a fabulous character. I even found myself loving her “dream” brother, Valentine. He was such a unique and loving character and always had Zoe’s best interest in mind. There were a few times that I thought he may actually be a spy or someone who would turn on her, but that was just because so many stories seem to take that route now days.

The world beyond the living was so twisted and creepy and it gave my horror loving mind something to chew on.

The only reason I gave this book a 3 star review is because I did become bored with the story a little bit and at times found it hard to continue reading, yet I loved so much about this. I am actually a little confused about my feelings for the story. It was different and I couldn’t figure out exactly what was going to happen, which is rare in YA novels. Also, there was no instant love/romance going on. This is simply a girl trying to figure out life after the death of her father and trying to do the right thing.

It really does give me a feel of Wizard of Oz. But I don’t want to go into too much detail as to how it is similar in case I ruin the story for someone.

Despite my rating, I would recommend this to friends because it was such a different story and it did keep my interest.

As a little P.S. Here…if you love all the nerdy things of the world, you love the fact that Wil Wheaton even read and reviewed this book. Not the reason I bought or read the book, but it made me giggle in delight.

April Book Haul

Hello Friends! First, let me tell you about the heart attack I almost had today. I went to save something to my flash drive that I save all my short stories, book reviews, and author interviews on. Everything that has to do with this blog is on this flash drive.

Well, as I went to save something I noticed that none of my files were showing up. EMERGENCY EMERGENCY! Yes. I downloaded a program to recover files and it didn’t find the files. So…I went running to my mom crying. I don’t cry often so you can imagine how devastated I was. Mom hooked my flash drive into her computer and my files showed up! I quickly saved them to a new flash drive and I am back in business. Though I have learned my lesson.

Lesson today, back up your files in several different places! I will be investing in an external/portable hard drive, possibly signing up for one of those cloud services, and saving everything on several flash drives. I plan on doing a back up at least once a week. This will not happen again!

But let’s get on with this!

Book Haul

Bought Books

It was a rare month for me. I decided to hold off on buying so many books. Two of them I ordered in March, but didn’t receive until April. The other three were from the SC Comic Con. I got to meet the authors and everything.

Ruin and Rising

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo. This was one of the ones ordered in March. It’s also the third book in the Grisha series. I have the first two so it only made sense to get the third. This was bought at BookOutlet. The Kiss of Deception

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson. This is the first book in the Remnant Chronicles. I have heard this was a good book so I wanted to give the series a try. Look at me being all adult and only buying the first book…Until the rest are available at a discounted price on BookOutlet anyways. lol

Beast Within by Tyffani Clark Kemp. This is the first book I bought at the SC Comic Con. It’s part of a series. It’s also a retailing of Beauty and the Beast. I love retailings so I had to have it.

Quincy Harker

Year One: Quincy Harder by John G. Hartness. This is a collection of novellas of the Quincy Harker story. Another book I picked up at the SC Comic Con. John G. Hartness had a few other books that I would like to get my hands on. He was fun to chat with.

The Mussogsky Riddle

The Mussorgsky Riddly by Darin Kinnedy. This is the last book I got at the SC Comic Con. The author was probably one of my favorites to talk to as well. He explained the story really well too. The story line kind of reminds me of Cell with Jennifer Lopez. I honestly can not wait to start reading this one. It’s sitting on my book shelf waiting for me to pick it up.

I also bought Dead Set by Richard Kadrey. I forgot to add it in my pictures. Mainly because it is sitting on my bedside table. I am about half way done with it and it’s awesome. The best part about it is that I bought this book at Dollar Tree. You can’t beat paying a dollar for a good book.

What did you buy in April? Anything good?

What are You Reading?

Hello Friends! Happy Monday! I know you just don’t like Monday’s, who does? Monday is truck day for me so it is a long and exhausting day of moving boxes and trying not to kill myself on the metal rollers that we used to unload trucks. But! We have something awesome to look forward to, books!

This week I will start listening to Finders Keepers by Stephen King.

I can’t wait to dig into this one. It’s the second book in the Bill Hodges series. Last month I listened to Mr. Mercedes and that book was…crazy.

I am reading Dead Set by Richard Kadrey.

This book so far is fantastic. I find it hard to put down at night.

Minutes Before Sunset by Shannon A. Thompson

This book has been interesting so far, but I am not sure that I am really into it. I will finish it. I like it enough to finish the book, but I am not sure I will continue on with the series…We will see.

I have another book that I am supposed to be reading, but I just can’t bring myself to actually read it. I also have a few books that I need to read for the Author of the month. Hopefully on my days off this week I can really dig into them.

So, tell me, what are you reading?

Hello Friends! Happy Monday…or you know, whatever…Monday.

For anyone interested to know, I am feeling better! Energy is still super low, but my head isn’t nearly as congested and it is safe to say I will live…not that there was ever a chance I was dying. I’m just super dramatic when I am sick.

Let’s get on to what you all came her for today!

I am still listening to Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

This book is so good and messed up! I absolutely love it! And I am almost done with it!

Still reading Changes by Jim Butcher

Since I have been sick I haven’t really been reading much so…I kind of got behind. I am hoping to finally finish this book this week.

I started reading Minutes Before Sunset by Shannon A. Thompson this week.

It’s actually really interesting. I have been following Shannon’s blog for a while now, I just never read her books. This book came up on sale and I decided to give it a try. I am always a little leery about authors I haven’t read before. Even if I read their blogs. But so far I am really pleased.

I am also reading Dead Set by Richard Kadrey

Funny story, I found this book at the Dollar Tree. Yes, I paid a buck for this book! I am only one chapter in and it is so interesting. When I bought it I actually had a lady ask me how I knew I was going to like the book. I had just checked on Goodreads to make sure it wasn’t a second or third book in a series. That is the only problem with buying books from Dollar Tree. Half the time they are part of a series and never the first book.

Anyways, the lady couldn’t believe I was paying money for a book I knew nothing about. My answer…”I like the cover.” I admit, I am one of those people that judges a book by it’s cover. I found one of my favorite authors because I liked a cover, and so far I have liked just about everything I bought just because I liked the cover.

That is all today. I am reading way too many books at once. I have a few days off this week and I am kind of hoping to knock these out this week! Before the end of the month!
