Well…Hello

Hello Friends,

It has been a long time since I have been here. I will open WordPress and start to type something and then decided that I just wasn’t ready to come back. I tried to come back a few times and I wasn’t healed enough. It has now been a year and a month since my dad passed away. Things are getting back to normal for real this time. I am working a new job. We have caught up on our bills and we won’t lose the house. My dad is still a big hole missing in my life, but I am getting better. I am living again.

I got up one morning and I realized that I needed to get back to my life. I needed to get back to the dreams I once had and the things I used to do. It was time to get back to reading and writing. I haven’t completely stopped doing all the things, but I slowed down to the point where I would have been better to just not do the things. But I want to get back to it.

I thought there was no better time to come back then my favorite month of the year. Spooky month! I seriously enjoy the month of October. All my favorite things are around and it makes me happy. So, I start back my blogging journey this month!

Spooky month.png

Here are some things I have planned.

1. Watch at least 1 horror movie a day.
2. Read all the Goosebumps and fear street books I have. I have 16 of them.
3. Write 1 spooky short story a week.
4. Write everyday!

I am going to get back on this road, this journey to being something more than just a girl who lives in the south and works in retail. My ultimate goal in life is to make my way to book con. Become a published author. And inspire others to follow their own dreams. I have had enough time to sit in the dark and feel sorry for me. My dad wouldn’t be happy with me if I didn’t keep going after my dreams.

What are your plans for this month??

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends! I realize it has been a really long time since I have been around. But…hopefully I am back. I got plans! So, I thought the best way to get back into the swing of things is to just jump in and get back to the same old routine. Starting with our Monday, what are you reading?!

Now, I have to be honest. I have not finished reading a book since September of 2017. My dad passed away at the start of September and I just have not been able to get my heart back in the game. I have listened to a few audio books, but that is it. So…I am trying to get back into reading. It’s still a little hard because I can’t seem to focus on what I am reading and my mind likes to wander more now while I am reading. It’s strange. It’s difficult too.

But let’s get to it. I am reading a few books at the moment!

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. This is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

The lightning thief

The Gender Game by Bella Forrest.

The Gender Game

All Rights Reserved by Gregory Scott Katsoulis. This book is so odd and amazing. I am actually slightly in love with it.

All Rights Reserved

White Trash Zombie Apocalypse by Diana Rowland. This is the third book in the White Trash Zombie series. I am listening to this on audible and the story is rather interesting. It reminds me of iZombie.

White Trash Zombie

That is all for now. My hopes are to get a few of these finished this week. At least one anyways, in time for a book review for this week.

Your turn, What are you reading?

What is Coming is Better Than What Has Gone

Hello friends!

I know, it has been a really long time! Like…4 months! Let me fill you in on what has been going on. You see, back in March my parents started the process of getting a brand new home. A home that I would be moving into as well, because until I am married I will be staying home (it’s just smart.) So the whole process started and then…there was a ton of waiting! During that waiting I just couldn’t find the drive to blog. I wasn’t reading as much and I had pretty much stopped writing anything. I started to hate writing book reviews and I really disliked taking request from authors. I just lost all gumption.

Come to find out there was actually more to my loss of drive then I was seeing. You see, our old home had mold. So much mold that it was slowly killing us. Don’t worry though, no one ended up in the hospital or to terribly sick. It did cause some health issues and a lot of them are straightening out as we speak. I was always tired, I didn’t want to do anything, and there was some pain.

In July we found out that the home would be ready and they would be tearing down our old home and bringing out the new one. This meant that we had to get out and find somewhere to stay during the whole process. This lead to 6 weeks in cannibal woods. It was a small home out in the woods. We had no cable, no internet, and even our phones had trouble getting service. It was like stepping back into the stone age!

Here is a picture of our front yard in Cannibal woods! THE FRONT YARD! Nothing but trees all around.

We hadn’t planned on being in the rental for so long, but things happen. Tuesday of this week my parents were finally able to sign the final papers and the rest is…still in progress. We are at home. WE ARE HOME! I have an office!! I am in the process of setting it up and getting my books out, but I have to dig out my bookshelves first. The old book shelves are going to be temporary though because I am doing a whole 10 foot wall of shelves for books. I can’t wait. I will even have a reading area in my office. I’m so excited to get it all set up! And the best part is that I have a whole separate room for my bed! It’s great.

So, this is my blog to let you all know that I will be back. I am back! Hopefully starting next week I will have some fun book related blogs going on, maybe only once a week for a little bit. I am even considering joining the whole booktube world and get a YouTube channel going…though not many people are happy with YouTube at the moment, so I’m still considering that.

Tell me, what have you been up to!? I have so many blog post to catch up on!

Rejecting a Review

books-2241631_1920

Hello friends!

So, I know that I have not been active on my blog lately, but I have still been reading and writing in my own time. I do a lot of writing now days, at least 1,000 words a day, though I am not working on any one particular item. I am waiting to get my new office set up, hopefully with in the next month or so.

The other day I was contacted by someone who wanted me to read and review a book for their client. I was ecstatic seeing as I have not had a review request in a while. With an inactive blog like mine, you don’t get too many. I forgot how stressful it could be. I took the request and gave it my very best and the worst thing happened…

I could not finish the book. Oh yeah, Heather DNF’d a book. I don’t like doing that. I hate not finishing a book, but when you have so many books that you want to read, that book you are not enjoying can terribly slow down your reading progress. Sadly, this resulted in me having to email the publicist and informing her that I could not finish the book. I thought long and hard on how to approach the situation and I was afraid of cutting ties to other reviews.

Here is what it all comes down to. As a reader and reviewer, what I read is my choice. No one pays me to read their books. No one pays me to put a review on my blog for their books. Yes, I could get more traffic to my blog, but enjoying what I read is a little more important for me.

The thing that I hate more than anything is giving a bad review for anything. I will give semi bad reviews, but most of the time I will avoid really negative reviews. Although, I have been known to leave a few bad reviews on Goodreads.

This book that I read I did give up to 30% before I sat it down for good. It’s hard to know when to put down a book. And to be honest with you, why do we feel the pressure to pick a certain spot to stop at? Again I say, most of us read for the joy of reading. No one is paying us to do this. If you don’t like a book, put it down and move on.

One day, when I have published my own book, I hope to get honest reviews. I want to know if someone disliked my book so much that they couldn’t even finish it. As a writer, listening to things like that could make me a better writer. I am not out to please every reader, but if someone were to put down my book I would want to get down to the reason of it. Did they put it down because it just wasn’t their cup of tea? Did they put it down because I needed to put more work into it? Did they put it down because the writing was horrible? The more you know about how your readers feel, the better a writer you become.

With all that said, I have learned a valuable lesson with this rejected review. Reading is what I do for fun. It is a hobby just as my blog is my hobby. If something causes me to lose interest for my hobby, you leave that thing behind so you can get back to the love of the hobby.

I will also give any book a try, but as soon as I am not into it, I will not feel bad for putting it down.

How about you? Do you DNF books? Why or why not? And if you do DNF books, at what point do you let yourself be okay with moving on?

Book Review: Delirium

Title: Delirium
Author: Lauren Oliver
Publisher: HarperCollins
Published: February 7th 2012
Genre: Fantasy | YA

synopsis
Delirium is about a world where love his been outlawed and cured. The cure happens at 18 and everything from then on is easier, happier, or so says the government. Lena has never questioned the cure or the sickness that is love. She knows that the cure didn’t work on her mother and that is, or was, her only fear. But then she meets someone new, a boy, who makes her rethink everything in her life. Her eyes are open now and things are not as simple as she once believed them to be.

review
Delirium, while not the best book I have ever read, made me really think about my own world and the things I take as truth. This story can be compared to our own lives in some ways that it’s scary. Lena’s world has been run by loveless people and the world is a loveless place. At 18 everything is decided for her, from who she will marry, to where she work, how many kids she will have, and where she will live. She has no choice in the matter of her life. Even the girl she has known most of her life, her best friend, will never be as close to her as she is now.

This is an amazing book because of the fear I got from reading it. Not just the fear, but the sadness. There are people living without love, doing the same thing over and over again and not caring. They want this bland life because it is easier than feeling anything other than content. But it makes you wonder if they even feel content, deep down they have to feel some kind of sadness for what they have lost.

I do like the way love is pinned as a disease and how well the author explained why it was a problem. When I first started reading it all I could think was how stupid the concept was, but the more I thought about love and the effect it has on our bodies, it actually made sense. I found myself at one point thinking how I wouldn’t mind having a procedure to remove love from my brain, but as I continued reading the story I realized how much love is needed in the world. These people don’t just lose love for the opposite sex, they don’t just lose the need to be with someone, they lose the need and love for family and children. That is no life to live.

By the end of the book my heart was racing for Lena to get out and away from this crazy world. I wanted her to save all of the poor souls who had been corrupted. With that being said, I can still see the draw of a life that is chosen for you. Not having to make your own big life decisions could be such a stress free way to live, but is it really worth it.

I like a book that puts me into deep thought, and this book did just that. It made me question my own reality.

rating3starsI enjoyed it, but I may not finish the series and one read through was enough.

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!!

It’s that time again. I actually have something new this week. And I am not reading just one book. Come on, you didn’t think I could last that long reading just one book at a time did you?

Let’s jump right in!

Artifacts, Dragons, and other Lethal Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge
29816822

I love love love this series. I love the main character and all the hot guys she has in her life. I love that she owns a bakery and kicks butt. I love everything about this series. It is also feeding the deep dark void that was left when Kim Harrison finished her Hallows Series. Now I have this, and Jade, and cupcakes!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
17675462

I have been known to avoid a series of books just because of the hype. I avoided this one for that reason and now I am asking myself “Why, why, why?!” So far it has been such an amazing story and I can’t get enough of it!

Undercurrent by Paul Blackwell
16065498

I don’t have much to say about this one yet. I haven’t been reading it as much as the other two books. I can’t help it, I love the other books so much they have consumed me. But so far Undercurrent has been interesting and I am hoping it gets a little bit more fast paced than what it is. Okay, so I got a little bored with it! But I am just at the beginning. I will at least give it to half way before I give up on it.

That is all I have for this week. I am hoping to finish all these books this week. Which is very likely. I am almost done with The Raven Boys and almost at the half way point with Artifacts, Dragons, and other Lethal Magic. If I had any days off this week (I do but it’s later in the week) I would for sure finish them.

So, what are you reading?

What are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!! It’s that time again. Time to take over the world!

Wait…that’s not right. That’s next week.

What are you reading?

I am still reading Replica by Lauren Oliver
28448287

It’s not that I am not enjoying the book, I have been having an issue with my energy this week. I seem to always be super tired. I will get to read a few pages before I am passing out. The most I have read is at work on my lunch breaks and that is only 30 minutes. I am not a fast reader, so 30 minutes is not enough to finish the little bit I have left.

But, the great thing is I will probably finish this book today.

So I have two books waiting for me to pick them up. I’m not sure which one I will start.

The first is Heartless by Marissa Meyer.

18584855

I love Marissa Meyer so this may be the obvious choice…BUT!

Undercurrent by Paul Blackwell

16065498

I found this book at Dollar Tree and I couldn’t pass it up. It sounds so good!

So those are my choices for my next book. Maybe I can get to both of them this week. Fingers crossed.

Book Review: This Savage Song

book-review-title

Title: This Savage Song
Author: Victoria Schwab
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Published: July 5th, 2016
Genre: Fantasy | YA | Paranormal

synopsis
This Savage Song is about a world where monsters are real. August Flynn is a monster who tries to be human, but is constantly reminded by his brother that he is nothing but a monster. He wants to be like his father, good and kind, and human. Kate Harker wants nothing more than to be recognized by her father, but to do that she has to prove that she is as ruthless as he is.

August and Kate end up at the same school together and life is never the same again.

review
I put off reading this book for a little while, mainly because of the hype. Most books with a lot of hype around them tend to fall flat for me. I have heard a lot of amazing things about Victoria Schwab’s writing and I broke down and read This Savage Song. I am so glad that I did because this is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

What I liked about this book is that the world is so different from our own. Monsters are created by crimes of a human and I love that concept so much. The idea that a monster created by evil and this monsters strength is determined by the severity of the crime is a genius idea! What I don’t like about the idea is the fact that the humans of this story didn’t take into consideration, or didn’t seem to fear, the monsters they created by their crimes. On one side of the city you have a man who lets the monsters run free and makes humans pay for protection. He probably pays some humans to do evil things just to create new monsters. On the other side, one little notion of evil and someone is sent to take care of the trouble. I just feel like in a world like this humans would be a little more wary about their crimes when something far more worse can come of those crimes.

One thing that I did love about this story is that there was no underlying love story. Kate and August end up on the run together, but they do not fall in love. Kate can’t help August if his monster side takes over. August does resist his monster side more when Kate is around, but that is because he is more human than any human. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone. I love that we can have a YA novel without some instant love story. Kate and August were friends at the end, both headed in new directions in their life.

In the end, I enjoyed reading this story. I love that the ending was a well rounded ending, but left me super excited about the next book. I was so excited about the next book that I almost cried when I realized it wasn’t out yet. Can we please hurry and get the next book?

rating5starsI would re-read this again before reading the next book.

Have you read this book? What were your thoughts?

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends! I’m getting ideas and making plans and goals and I am going to get back on track with this blogging thing. Why? Because I love it! Even if I don’t have a lot of followers, I love connecting with a few of the readers I have connected with. I might start sharing a little something other than reading and writing. Maybe a monthly post on what I am doing outside of the reading and writing world?

Enough of with the chit chat. Let’s get to the reading thing.

What am I reading this week?

Replica by Lauren Oliver
28448287

I am reading one chapter of Gemma’s story and then reading one chapter of Lyra’s story. I knew that if I read one story all the way through, I wouldn’t read the other side of the story. I would be bored with it and move on. But this has been a fun story to read because of how I am reading it. It’s interesting to have two sides of the story, but I find myself wondering about the other characters in the book and what their side of it is. I need all the POV’s!

And that is all…

Yeah, I am focusing on this book because it is a library book and I want to hurry and get it back to the library before my time runs out. Though I am wishing I had bought this book. The concept is so interesting with it being two books in one. I am glad that it was printed that way because I am a little bored with authors who publish a book and then say “Oh, buy this book too! It’s the same story but from someone else POV.”

Also, I have found that I really love Lauren Oliver! I just finished reading Delirium by her as well. She is such a creative writer. I can’t wait to read more by her.

What are you reading?

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!

As I am trying to get back into the swing of things I have been re-evaluating the post that I really enjoyed. “What are you Reading?” is one of my favorite post. I love sharing with others what I am reading and I love even more when other share with me what they are reading. I don’t have a lot of real life friends that love books as much as I do. So I have to rely on you wonderful internet folks that I love so much!

Let me tell you what I am currently reading!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
9361589

I am listening to this book, but it’s not the first time I have read it. I read this a few years ago. I was enamored by the cover. And the title. I have always been fascinated by stories, shows, and movies that revolved around a circus. Then you put that circus into the night and I am in heaven.

I am loving The Night Circus as much this time around as I did the first time. It is just so full of whimsy and mystery. The visuals are so beautiful and enchanting. If you haven’t read this one yet, I highly suggest it. It is becoming my favorite book. I just want to cuddle with it!

Ensnared by A.G. Howard

22447220

I am having trouble finishing this book. There has been a love triangle through the entire series, but it is getting annoying in this last book and I just want to get on with the story. I will finish it this week, I know that much, but I have not enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the first book.

Ghost Story by Jim Butcher
8058301

I am finally moving on with the Dresden Files. But I am finding this book hard to read…I think it’s just because Harry is dead! I don’t like it at all and I just want to get through it so I can move on to the next book.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
17675462

I almost didn’t want to read this book because of the author. I read her book Shiver and I didn’t like it much at all. I broke down and borrowed this book from the library and I think I might like it. I could change my mind once I get a little more into the book, but at the moment I am glad I picked it up.

So tell me, what are you reading?
