What Are You Reading?

Hello friends and happy Monday! Shockingly I got the day off work. This NEVER happens on a Monday due to it being truck day. But sadly, I don’t get another day off until Saturday so my day off is spent getting things ready for my blog this week. Of course, that isn’t a bad thing because this is a hobby that I love to do.

Let’s get this party started!

This week I am reading three books and listening to one. I am trying to get last minute books in to up my count for this month. I know, it’s not a race and as long as we are reading it doesn’t matter how many books we read…but when you have already bought 11 books in a month you kind of have to pick up the speed as to counter balance the TBR list…right?

Changes by Jim Butcher

I am on page 183/438. I need to pick up the pace, though I am reading it quicker than usual. This so far is my favorite book in the Dresden files series. I feel like we are seeing a new side to Dresden that I knew was there, but have yet to see. It has furthered my crush on Dresden.

Shadows, Maps, and Other Ancient Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge

This is the 4th book in the Dowser series and I just can’t stop! I am in love with this series and I want more. Though, I debated last night if I wanted to start this one. Jade is made at Desmond and I really wanted something to happen between those two. The chemistry between them is amazing and ugh…I need Jade to fall madly in love with McGrowly and never look back. Sadly, I have already looked at a few reviews for this one because of the way the 3rd book ended and it looks like Desmond doesn’t even stand a chance with Jade and there is a new love interest and I am not okay with it, unless it was the vampire! Come on Meghan! I need McGrowly or the vampire to win Jades heart!

Sorry, the wound it still fresh from the 3rd book…

The Reflections of Queen Snow White by David Meredith

I was contacted by the author of this novel and he asked if I would review it. It sounded really interesting so I said I would give it a go. Normally, I would not have picked up this book at all. Mainly because the cover. I just don’t like it and I can’t really explain why. But I do love a fairy tale story and this one is obviously about Snow White and..Charming is dead! I started this one last night and I am still not so sure I am going to like it. I will continue reading, obviously, because I hold hope for all books. They are all a work of art and at least one person has poured their heart into the story. So far though…not to thrilled with it.

Lastly, what I am listening to.

The Game of Lives by James Dashner

I am in the last 30 minutes of this book. It has been so good and this book has been one joy ride of emotions. I am telling you, this series may be better than the Maze Runner series. I can’t wait to finish this, though I have a feeling I know part of how it will end.

Week GoalThis week I want to finish all the books above. Really bump up that book count. I am already 4 books ahead of schedule. I am making a little cushion for when Christmas gets here I guess.

I would like to start reading Serafina and the Black Cloak by Rober Beatty

And The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter

That is all I am going to challenge myself to this week. It’s going to be a busy week.

I have two questions for you today.

  1. What are you reading?
  2. Do you start on a book as soon as you finish one or do you give yourself a break between books?

Does It Count?

I have never listened to an audio book before. I have always dismissed it as pointless and useless. I would scoff at people who said they listened to books all the time. I felt like the magic of a book was lost in translation if you didn’t see and read the words yourself.

Last night I was going into work and I decided I needed to give it a try. My mom used to always tell me “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it” any time she wanted me to try something new. I don’t know why, but those words have always stuck with me and I realized that I was knocking something I had never given a chance.

I downloaded audible, signed up for my 30 day free trial and downloaded a book called The Iron King.

I have been wanting to read this book for a while now. I fell in love with the artwork of the covers, so it was the perfect time and the perfect way to try out audio books. I was a little skeptical going into this. I thought I would hear the words and never remember the story. I thought I would miss things because I would stop paying attention. I thought I would get bored and turn it off before the night was over.

I am here to say, I was 100% wrong. So far, this book is amazing and I am in love. Not just with the book but audio books. I was reading a book while working and I wasn’t missing a thing. I heard every word, saw every detail, and caught every flaw of the characters. It was almost better than reading. I say almost because there were a few times I wanted to look down at the words but I couldn’t.

I missed reading the words, but it made my night at work go so much faster and it was so much more enjoyable. Instead of putting up gift boxes I was dancing with fairies and running through the woods. I was going to magical portals and dealing with changelings. It was amazing. A regular boring night turned into a fantastical night full of mystery and fights.

As some of you know, at the beginning of the year I set a goal to read 50 books. I didn’t quite make it. I found myself in moments where I was just too depressed to read, or had my nose in the TV. Or sleeping, because I did a lot of sleeping this year. I was short by about 10 books, if that much. But I am setting the same goal for 2015 and I am going to add audio books to my list.

Now, I debated over this all last night. Does an audio book count as a book I read? I think it does. I am still exploring a new world, hearing new words, going on a new adventure. My mind is still creating images before my eyes of the things in the book. I think it is all the same, I have read a book.

Don’t worry though, I will still read books the old fashioned way. Book in hand, laying in bed and forgetting that I should be getting sleep. I will never be able to stop the habit of enjoying the sound of a turning page or watching the words turn into the characters. But if I can “read” a book while I am at work and making money…can life get any better?

What is your opinion? Do you consider audio books as reading a book, or just another form of entertainment?

Bookstore Dangers

Yep. That is my Nightstand!

Yep. That is my Nightstand!

I went to the book store yesterday.  I just had this undying need to go and look around.  It’s a used bookstore that I absolutely love.  They are so well organized and there are so many books.  Now, I have plenty of books to read on my Kindle.  I downloaded a bunch of books at the beginning of the year, but you just can’t beat the feeling of picking up a book and taking it home to join all your other friends.  Yes, friends because that is exactly what my books are to me.  My friends and my escape from reality, though reality isn’t so bad right now.

So, I went to the book store called Mr. K’s and browsed all the shelves looking for something new.  I want to branch out and read books from different genres.  I have a ton of books about vampires and werewolves.  I have also read a lot of young adult books.  So, I went with a few things that were different.  I bought a series called “Fools Gold” by Jude Fisher.  As well as a book Called “The Warded Man” by Peter V. Brett.  At the moment I am reading “Bitten” by Kelley Armstrong.  “Bitten” is now a series on Syfy and I am saving all the episodes for when I finish the book, but the book is also part of a 13 book series. I love long series.  It’s great getting to spend a lot of time with your favorite characters.

I didn’t stop there.  I made my way to the young adult section.  I can’t help myself.  They usually have the cutest love stories and since I don’t have a love life and never have had a love life, I enjoy the simple, cute, and clean love stories the best.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the more mature love stories too.  I have read the “Black Dagger Brotherhood” series and would like to revisit that series soon, there are a few books I never bought and I want to catch up.  I have also read the books that “True Blood” was based on.   Not to mention that I actually did read, but did not enjoy, the “50 Shades of Gray” series.  Actually, I enjoyed the story, but the erotica part of it was definitely not my style.

I ended up spending 42 dollars on books yesterday.  I bought 12 books.  3 of the books were the “Fools Gold” series and another 3 were part of the young adult series “Nightshade” series.

I was so torn when I went to bed last night.  I always read before I go to sleep and I just didn’t know which book to start!  I ended up not starting any new books and just picked up where I left off in “Bitten.”

I am such a book nerd.  I am so excited for the stack of books now sitting on my nightstand, just waiting for me to dive in and lose myself!

P.S.  I have added a new page to my blog for books that I have read this year.  You can find it HERE. Check it out and let me know if you have read any of the books on my list or plan on reading them.
