My Craft Corner: Minnie Mouse Party

Craft Corner

Finally! I have a name for Mondays. For the past month I have been sharing my creations of the past week. I couldn’t think of anything to call it and I kind of didn’t want to add it to the schedule and make it a permanent thing. I don’t always get the chance to make something that I want to share, but everyday I am off work I try and make something.

This week was fantastic in creations though! I had to make cake pops and a smash cake for my cousins daughters first birthday. It all came out so wonderful too!

Minnie cake

The cake came out so great!! Like, I shocked myself with this one. The cake is white cake and the icing is my own homemade butter-cream icing. The one thing I learned from this is that I will never make a box white cake again. I need to find my own recipe because this cake wasn’t the best tasting.

The bow was made from sugar cookies and covered in candy melts. I was going to cover it in royal icing, but I couldn’t get my royal icing to work right. It wouldn’t thin out to where I could use it for flooding. I was so aggravated.

The cake shape was made using a 6inch cake pan for the face. The ears were made out of a square cake that I cut out with a giant cookie cutter. Like…who makes cookies that big?

The bow was made using two heart shapes and a circle. While the candy melts were drying I etched in the bow folds with a toothpick. And I iced the rest of the cake using a star tip. I am seriously in love with how well this turned out.

Minnie Cake pops

The cake pops were another great feat! I bought a box of stuff from a friend who is getting out of the cake making business. In all the stuff she gave me there was a chocolate mold of bows. Instead of using heart sprinkles I used the mold and it made the cake pops 100 times cuter. Again, IN LOVE! The pink was supposed to have white dots like Minnie’s dress, but I thought it looked terribly cute and simple like they are. So I kept it that way.

The only thing special I did to these was use mini oreos for the ears. I found that tip online while looking for Minnie Mouse cake pops. I heard they were delicious too.

DSCN1692After I finished the Minnie mouse cake pops I had some cake and candy melts left over, so I made these adorable things. Which, I will be giving away on my Facebook page for The Catch All Shop. Just click HERE to check it out.

And as promised, I said I would share with you how I decorate my agenda for the week. I once shared what my monthly calendar looks like, so here is what my weekly looks like.

DSCN1694I made the agenda myself. It’s in a composition notebook. So it’s really boring looking to start with. Which doesn’t help when I open it…I just don’t have the desire to keep up with it. So once a week I sit down and decorate it to death. Some weeks I go a little overboard. This week, I don’t think I added enough color…

The water drop things are for me to keep up with how much water I drink every day. Most days I fill in all the water drops, which is my goal of 3 liters. The little colorful dots on the side is where I write my work schedule. Every night I sit down at my desk and fill in the day. I write how I felt that day or anything I may find important to remember. If something important happens that week that I know will happen I usually use a piece of colorful tape on the day it happens and write on top of that. That way it pops out a little more.

The rest, the stickers…they are all completely random. I just try and make it as colorful as possible.

That is all I have for you this week. What did you create this past week?

Cakes and Cupcakes and Cakepops, Oh My!

This past week has been a week of fun. I have been playing around with cake pops again. It seems any time I have a day off work I am in the kitchen playing with cake pops. I have found love for them…or rather a rediscovered love for it. Around Christmas time I was having issues with the cake pops when dipping them in the melted chocolate. I actually found out that it was the chocolate that I was using. It was over a year old, still good, but it didn’t melt as well. I was using a ton of paramount crystals (used to thin out chocolate) and it was refusing to be the consistency that I needed.

About a week ago, my cousin put in an order for her daughters first birthday. She wants Minnie mouse cake pops and a mini mouse smash cake.

Now, if you don’t know, a smash cake is the small cake that a child gets on their first birthday. It’s the one that they smash their hands and face into. I have had so many people ask me what a smash cake was. I thought everyone knew.

Minnie Mouse cake

This is just a rough test of the Minnie Mouse cake. I am going to be covering it in buttercream icing instead of frosting. I will also add a pink bow that I will make out of royal icing. It will dry hard and make a perfect topper for the cake. Also, how else would you know that it was Minnie Mouse.

Minnie mouse cake pops

This is just another rough test of the Minnie Mouse cake pops. They are so adorable! I love how perfect they came out…well, perfect as in they will be perfect when I do the final run. I googled a few ways to do the Minnie mouse and found this option. In the process of making them I was worried that it wouldn’t turn out good, but once all the pieces came together it was awesome.

I had a few cake balls left after I figured out Minnie Mouse and decided to play a little more. I have seen the other cake pop people doing a lot of bride and groom cake pops so I wanted to try it. Mind you, at this point I only had black and pink chocolate so I was working with what I had.

groom cake pop

The groom actually reminded me a lot of Doctor Who. I guess the pink and the big red bow helps. But I did it! I made a groom just like all the other big wig cake pop makers. I feel like I am moving up in the world.

I showed my mom and she asked “What about the bride?” So I went back to the drawing board to see if I could do the bride as well.

Bride cake pops

Another rough test and I get a general idea of how I would do bride cake pops. It’s amazing! I seriously love them so much. I really feel like I am going some where with my business and I am perfecting my craft.

I still had some cake balls left and a few of them I had dipped to make grooms out of. It was late and I was tired. I also had to be at work at 8:30 the next morning so I had to get to bed. So…I was putting up the cake pops and I noticed something. If you turn the tuxedo cake pop upside down, they look like granny’s with buns. So I made faces for them.

Granny cake pops

How adorable are they? I want to work with the concept a little more to make a polished looking granny, but I like what I got from play time.

That was all I made this past week, but I feel like it was a productive week at least.

The Orders Roll In

I have been trying to build my business for a few weeks now. I have done several projects and even a few request. I am working on a wreath for a friend now.

While the things on my Etsy shop (you can check it out HERE) is not selling too well, I have been getting a lot of cake pop orders and this excites me terribly. I love doing cake pops and I can’t wait to have more orders to fill. Maybe even one day, I can quit my job and just deal with my online store and do cake pops and cakes.

My first order of cake pops was a request from a lady that I work with. She wanted bald man cake pops. Of course, I looked all over the internet to find some kind of guide for it, but in the end I made them my own way.

Hello bald man cake pops! I honestly loved these so much. They came out so perfect! I am not offering cake pops in my Etsy store right now because I have to figure out how to ship these adorable cakes on a stick. But once I figure out a safe way to ship them, I am offering them to the world! Or, you know, to the US.

I have a cake pop order for April and they want minnie mouse cake pops. I am super excited to make them! Then another cake pop order for May for cake pops with cow print.

The best part about it all is that I get to make some just to play with. And once I have made them once, I will be faster at making them the next time. It is so much fun to play around with cake pops and get better at my craft.

While it may not seem like a lot of orders right now, I am excited just to have the few that I do have so far. Soon enough I will have one a week instead of one a month. Hopefully by then I won’t be working so much at my part time job.

Yay…A Day Off

I always get excited when I have a day off work. It used to mean time to relax and catch up on all my shows. Of course, these days ended with me feeling slightly depressed because I didn’t do anything and I was alone all day. I have found that the way to happiness is to be around others. At least for me it is. I just love being around people…as long as they are in a good mood and not yelling at me.

Lately, a day off work doesn’t mean the same thing. I am several weeks behind on any show that I don’t watch with my parents and I haven’t been able to play Sims for several weeks. I played Sims just the other night, for about 2 hours and had to get off to watch a show with my parents. If I don’t watch it with them I either miss it or it sits in my recordings until I watch it or give up and delete it. Also, it’s about the only time that I get to spend with my family since we are all so busy lately.

I’m telling you, my poor puppy doesn’t even know me anymore. I really need to set aside some time everyday to play with her.

So, here is why I have been so busy lately. As you may already know, I have opened an online shop at Etsy. I have been doing crafts a-plenty, to have things to sell. Though, I haven’t even sold the first item yet. Sadness. But I didn’t expect it to be a big hit over night anyways. I just wanted to get my stuff out there.

Today, my first day off in like 6 days, I am spending making a cake pop order for a lady I work with. This, of course, will help spread the word of my business and bring in my customers.

To add on top of all the crafty stuff I have been doing, I have also had the pleasure of reviewing books over at The Reading Bud. So that takes up a little bit of time as well.

Plus, let’s add a few sprinkles to this ice cream Sunday, I have been working hard on the short stories for the prompt challenge on Wednesdays.

The cherry on top? My fitness challenge between my family and I. Which has taken on a whole life of it’s own, growing bigger by the second. I am logging everything that I eat and trying to find better ways to log it. I haven’t been working out, which is horrible, but more on that Sunday.

And let’s add a spoon to the mix, you know, so you can eat this wonderful Sunday of awesomeness, I have been working on my book again. Going through it and seeing it for the outline that it is.

How does one function with so much going on in her life? A day off is a joke. It’s not a day of rest, it’s a day of more work. There is no such thing as a day off.

But it all boils down to the one goal I have set for myself that will take me through the rest of the year…

Work Harder

That’s the only thing that gets me through the day. Just reminding myself that if I want to make it in this world, I don’t have time to rest. Not right now anyways. I have to keep trucking through and fighting battles while I am still young enough to do so.

Out for Lunch: Back in 30

I keep disappearing and then coming back, posting a few post and disappearing again.  I have good reason for this…Okay maybe not.  I get so tied up with everything that I just forget to make time to write.

Don’t worry, it’s not just my blog that is suffering.  All forms of writing suffer from my lack of…motivation? Between work, gym, and spending time with Pixel, I just forget to sit down and write about all my adventures.

I gave up writing for a few weeks. Not blogs, I have obviously been writing a little there.  But my stories, my personal work, I pushed away to the side and decided not to bother with them for a bit. I did it and now I just can’t take it anymore.  There are two things in this world that I want more than anything…okay, three.

1. I want to own my own bakery and create beautiful cakes and tasty cupcakes.

2. I want my own family.  Husband, kids, family dog…all of that.

3. The most important one.  The one that eats away at me every day.  I want to be a traditionally published author.

I can’t help how my dreams progressed over the years.  I can’t help that in high school I found an outlet for my anger and fell in love with the idea of creating my own world.  I also can’t help that my imagination is so far out there that I just can’t cope with reality some days.

So, I took a break from my writing.  I even took a full week away from my blog.  It’s time to take down my ‘out for lunch’ sign and get back to work.  If there is one thing I have learned this year it is, to be successful you must work hard.  Work until you bleed.  Work until sweat drips down into your eyes.  Success is not something that is just thrown into your lap.  It is something that you work hard for.

I will succeed in whatever my heart desires.  At the moment, my heart desires to be a bakery owner/author. I will make it and I will be great.

A few years ago I told a few people that my montage music was now playing.  It paused for a moment, the track skipped.  I have fixed it and I don’t plan on hitting another glitch.

July Photos

July wasn’t a great month for me. I got lost in all the madness and stopped blogging a bit. I counted and only had 8 blogs for July. I have become a slacker, letting my blog go. It’s how it always happens. But I am coming back, I swear.

I notice that a ton of bloggers do a monthly round up of some sort. Last month I did a photo round up, and since most of the photos I take are for my blog, I decided that I want to keep this idea and make it a tradition.

So for the second month in a row, here are my photos from July!

My family and I have fallen in love with this Chinese place near my home. It’s called Epic Buffet. My main reason for going is for these lovely things. I’m not even sure what it’s called, all I know is it’s considered sushi and it is OMG amazing. I now want some sushi.

I just recently found out that you can eat corn on the cob raw. Yeah…you don’t have to cook it! I always though it was hard before it was cooked. To me it’s sweeter raw than when it’s cooked. I now eat corn like I eat apples. lol

Does any one play this game? It’s called Guess the Emoji. I got heavy into it for about a week. I grew bored with it after that. lol It was fun while it lasted though.

IMG_1768 IMG_1764 IMG_1762 IMG_1773 IMG_1778

You have seen all of these pictures, if you follow my blog. Just cakes and things that I have made this month. It has been a busy month for baking! I even made 25 dollars.

Pixel thought I had gone crazy. I was organizing some shelves and everything went to my bed. I think she was upset that I wasn’t paying her any attention.

IMG_1780 IMG_1785

I have been collecting dolls for a long time. Just recently I decided to sell some of them. I need the money for some bills that I need to pay. Since I lost my job in Feburary and rejoined the world of retail, I have had to make some sacrifices. That sacrifice is selling my dolls. I will be putting them on eBay this week. So sad.

I have even found time to work on some crafts. I took a mini composition notebook and covered it in some scrap book paper. I use this one for my checking account…having little money means I need to keep up with it a lot better than I am used to. lol

I made this at work. I had to save the day. Lady ordered a cake and her order wasn’t made it time. I was the only one there to make a cake, so I just had to wing it. I thought I did pretty good.

IMG_1792I found a mushroom on a walk with my cousin one day. It was just weird so I took a picture…

This bush is in my drive way. It always has such pretty flowers, but they don’t last very long. This is the first time I have remembered to get a picture before all the flowers wilted again.

That is all folks. Yeah, there are more pictures, but I am a nerd when it comes to photos. I don’t want to bore you all with pictures of random things. I just love snapping pictures of things.

Hopefully things in August won’t be as crazy and I will actually have more blogs for you. I hope you enjoy my pictures!

Sore Feet and Determination

First I would like to thank all the lovely new followers!! I promise I will get around to looking at your blogs and following back. Right after I catch up on all my other readings.

I have been a little MIA lately.  I think part of me is just too lazy to sit down and write a blog and another part of me feels like I don’t have anything interesting to say. Which is completely insane because I am awesome and everything I say is interesting.

I have been doing the same thing I was doing last time I made a post. Baking cakes and cupcakes, working, and going to the gym.  Let’s not forget reading.  I’m sure I have time for much more, but I let the day get away from me.

What other things should I be doing? I will give you a list.

  1. Writing.  My biggest dream is to become a traditionally published author and meet the great Stephen King. Wow Mr. King with my fancy words and wild imagination and then co-write a book with him.  It’s a big dream, I know, but why dream if you can’t dream big?
  2. Learning to use photoshop again so I can make my wordpress look that much more awesome. I lost Photoshop for a while and just got it back on my computer. I was super excited, but I haven’t used it yet.
  3. Baking more cakes.  I have a few people wanting cakes.  I need to practice making different cakes so I can get to my other dream of owning my own bakery. Yes, this girl has many dreams. I just can’t help myself.
  4. Reading more!! I have a goal of reading 50 books this year. I set my goal on Goodreads and until now I have always been a few books ahead. Now, I am “right on track.” I don’t like being “right on track!” I need to be ahead for when the holidays come around and I can’t read as much. I have to meet at least this goal this year!!
  5. Spending more time with Pixel.  My poor puppy probably feels neglected. I am always at work, at the gym, or hanging out at the mall with my cousin.  Pixel has to stay behind at home and wait for my return. But, when she greets me when I get home…best feeling in the world.

I’m tired of the list now. There are tons of things I need to be doing, but never seem to find the time to do them. My priorities are a little messed up I guess.

A little update, my feet hurt so bad! They are swollen and painful. I know it’s because of my weight, but with my cousin now going to the gym with me I am going a lot more. We have fun and get a good work out in. Hopefully I can stick to it this time. I just have to cut out the junk food. I have to try smaller samples of my cakes.

It’s obvious that I have to try them to see if they taste good, but I should probably just stop at a little taste.

I know that once I lose the weight I won’t have the problem with my feet anymore. I know that I am fat…there really is no other word for it. I will own up to the fact that I am fat and I need to do something about it. My biggest problem is night time. For some reason I want to eat everything in site. It’s just another thing I need to work on.  And I will. I am determined to be the girl I see in my head.

Hello? Is There Anybody Out There?

I know what you are thinking. “Heather, where have you been??!” It’s either that or, “Hey…who are you?” What ever works for you.

So here is the run down of the past week and why I have not been able to post all week.

First of all, I have been super lazy and have not sat at my computer to write a blog post for every day of the week like I had planned.  Also, I have been so super busy!

Monday night, when I would usually post a new blog to come up on Tuesday, I was up late baking cakes. I basically baked five cakes…that’s five store bought cake mixes. One of them I messed up terribly.  Two was for my cake decorating class.  The last two was for a cake I was testing for a friend who wanted a John Deere cake for her grandson.

Tuesday I had my cake decorating class.

I made and owl!

Mom made a cupcake.

After class Tuesday I ended up back at home to make a test run of a John Deere cake with checkerboard cake on the inside!

IMG_1772 IMG_1770

My first run turned out pretty good, but everything was a bit of a mess. So, I had to bake two more cakes and let them cool over night.

Wednesday I had to get up and decorate the final cake.

IMG_1773 IMG_1774 IMG_0753.JPG

It turned out so awesomely! I was super stoked about it. And the checkered board was so easy! I may post a blog on how I did it this coming week.

After the cake was done I had to hurry and get all my research together because I was leading a small group discussion at church that night. I was talking to Middle school girls about depression. I was running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.

Then I crashed and burned Wednesday night, but sadly I had to get up and go to work the next day. My wrist was killing me from all the cake stuff (I have carpal tunnel) and I was just wore slap out. I kept messing things up at work, but lucky for me it wasn’t anything terrible.

Then Friday, good ole Friday. I had a day off and no plans. My cousin wanted to go to the mall, so that is exactly where I ended up. At the mall for Starbucks and pretzels and a little window shopping.

Of course, it wasn’t resting at home and being lazy. But for some reason I actually felt relaxed at the end of the day.

This morning I woke up and was ready to go again. I have to work all weekend, plus Monday. Then cake class and a church thing Tuesday and youth group Wednesday. Here is to hoping I get a break Thursday, but if not…I guess this is my life now.

Busy, busy, busy. And I can’t really complain too much. I kind of like all the running.

Cake Decorating!

My wonderful mom paid for her and me to take a cake decorating class.  It’s a four week course and when it is finished we plan on taking the next four week course.  It’s pretty awesome.

Tuesday was our first class.  I was afraid I would be bored, but it was actually really fun.  I learned a few new things and was able to decorate a few cupcakes at the end of the class.

We learned a few basic techniques, nothing too fancy, but “nothing too fancy” looks cute.

We mad a mess…seriously.

And everyone knows, if it’s messy, it’s fun!

Then yesterday I started at the bakery at work.  I didn’t get to take any pictures of the cakes that I was able to make yesterday.  They turned out pretty cute.  I realized yesterday that I can do this.  I can bake cakes and cupcakes and sell them.  I can make this a living because I have so much fun doing it.  I may not be the greatest artist, but when it comes to cake decorating it all comes down to imagination and patience.  Which, for some reason I only have patience when it comes to cakes.  So strange.

That is all I have for you today.  I have some stuff to work on. I keep trying to stay on task and have a blog post every day.  But then life just gets in the way…actually lazy gets in the way.  I was never good at doing what I am supposed to do.  Although, after work yesterday I did come home and play with my cake decorating things.  I made a few new colors of frosting and finished decorating the cupcakes I had left over.

Heather, where have you been?

I don’t know who reads my blog, or even cares to read, but for some reason I always feel the need to explain my absence.  So, my absence this time was due to laziness.

I have found something about myself that I didn’t know before.  I do this weird thing, where I get super excited to try something new, but then I fear I will mess it up.  When the fear sets in, I shut down.  I wait until the last minute to get it done, just because if I mess it up…I don’t know actually.  It really makes no sense what so ever!  I’m just a strange person.

I haven’t done much since I have gone MIA.  I have been working a lot with a new script that I am writing for the youth groups drama team.  I love those kids so much, and I want nothing more than for them to succeed in life.  I am giving them all I can.  I feel like it has become a battle though.  My ideas against what is “acceptable” in church.  For me, there are issues that need to be addressed, things that teens need to know exist.  Sadly, some church folks don’t agree with me.  Luckily, up to this point, the two leaders that I am working with on the drama team has liked my ideas.  Meaning, it’s not just me fighting to give these ideas a chance to live.

On top of that, I have been trying to finish up the freelance writing class I have been taking, along with baking cakes and getting classes set up for cake decorating.  This week I am working on doing a cake that is for a spa party and it has been requested that I do a fingernail bottle shaped cake.  It’s another one of those things I got excited about, the feared about.  It should have been done already.  I think my small kitchen plays a role in it not being done as well.  I seriously need my own kitchen!  Unfortunately, I can not afford my own place, so I am stuck living with my parents and stealing the kitchen when I can. Which, there is usually only one solid meal cooked at my house, but for some reason, when I go to make a cake or cake pops everyone needs to get into the kitchen.

Let me make this clear.  I live in a double wide trailer.  Ever seen a kitchen in a double wide trailer?  Some are actually nice, but mine is tiny.  It is not a good place to try to be creative, but I make do.  I think if I had a bigger kitchen, or less annoying family I would bake more, who knows.

October is coming!! It is seriously my favorite month ever!  I have so much to do! I need to figure out a costume and what treats I want to make.  I have to carve a pumpkin.  I have to make my aprons before October. So much to do.

What is coming up this week?  Well, I recently made a giant birthday cookie for my brothers birthday, so I will share that with you.  Wednesday is just another fun wacky day!  Thursday I may be sharing my fingernail polish bottle cake with you…it may be a fail, but I might surprise myself!  Friday I will finally show you what I have had in the works for about a month now.  It’s fun with googly eyes!

Anyways, if you have been waiting for a post…HERE IT IS!  If you are reading my blog for the first time WELCOME! I hope you stay!
