First Line: Fully aware that the vampire was watching me from somewhere deeper in the woods, I placed my second to last piece of single-origin Madagascar chocolate on my tongue and lovingly sucked on it.

Blurb from Goodreads: Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.
Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

Cover: I love the covers of all of these books. Especially the cupcake.

Review: This book takes place three months after the first book ended. Jade is coming to terms with her newly discovered powers, struggling to figure out what her other half is and trying to deal with what her sister had done and getting used to no longer having Sienna around.

Of course, there are some upsides to what she went through a few months back. She know has a little group of supernatural beings at her back. Kandy the werewolf, Kett the Vampire, and Desmond, Kandy’s pack alpha. Also, her mother seems to be sticking around unlike the times before. And let’s not forget that she still has her bakery where she continues to bake delicious cupcakes.

In the first book I felt the connection between Jade and McGrowly…I mean Desmond. I was hoping to touch on it in this book and OMG did we see a lot. The chemistry between those two is so amazing and I was so distraught when the book ended and there was no closure between the two. So of course, it was the first thing I hope to see in the third book.

The friendship that develops between Kandy and Jade in this book gives me serious friendship goals, and please forgive me for using the term friendship goals.

From the skinwalkers at the beginning to the showdown between the big bad black witch and her sorcerer…this book was amazing and I couldn’t stop reading it. I would go to work thinking about the book and having a hard time getting through the day because I couldn’t read.

Just…the spark between Desmond and Jade…I love it so much and I want more of them!

We also meet Rusty’s little sister, Mory, in this book. She is an angry teenager who wants revenge for her brother and just to see him one more time. She is a Necromancer so she has the ability to see the spirits of the dead and she shows up demanding that Jade take her to the place where Rusty died. I feel like this is the beginning of trouble for Jade. This is where it all starts.

My favorite parts of this novel may have been the moments with Jade and Desmond…but also seeing Jade come into her powers and really start to learn how to use them. And in the end she finally finds some answers she has been looking for and it leaves you with your jaw hanging open.

The ending had me scrambling for the next book because I just couldn’t leave it like that. I hate a cliff hanger, but I also love them. There is a true ending to this novel, which I appreciate more than you can imagine. I have been burned by too many books with horrible endings, but this one had a good ending and a wonderful cliffhanger to make you beg for more.

I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!
