First Line: “Ember, when did your parents die, and what was the cause of the death?”
Synopsis:Ember is a dragon, disguised as a human. Her task for the summer is to blend in with the humans, gain their trust, and prove to Talon that she is ready for whatever job she will be best at…for the rest of her life. Her biggest fear is that they will separate her and her twin Dante. And she hates that Talon chooses everything she does.
Garrett is a St. George soldier, trained to hunt and kill dragons. His task for the summer is to blend in with the normal humans and sniff out the dragon that is trying to pass as human. He doesn’t know the first thing about being a normal teenager and when he meets Ember he questions everything about the order and the truth about dragons.
Review: This book was pretty good. Had I actually read it instead of listening to the audio version, I would have loved it! The person reading Ember’s parts was so bland and boring. I didn’t like it.
But the story was really great. I loved the idea of dragons hiding among humans, learning everything about them, gaining their trust. I love that Ember was a strong enough character that she questioned everything she had ever been taught and saw the flaw of Talon.
Warning: Spoiler ahead. Move on to conclusion to skip spoilers. You will have to forgive me for the spoilers, but I just have to let my thoughts be heard. Last chance to move on before I let the spoilers fly free! Okay, Let’s talk about a few things that irritated me the most. Dante…he spends this entire book telling Ember that they will not be separated. He grows further and further from her. He becomes the dragon Talon wants him to be, even when Ember is trying so hard to make him see the truth. Then, when Ember is assigned her life long task, he doesn’t even bother to tell her what she is being signed up for. She has to go to someone else to find out. THEN!! He turns her in to Talon when she tries to go Rogue and take him with her. She just wants her brother to stay by her side and he turns his back on her. Way to go Dante…what a great brother you are! And then there is Garret. Oh Garret…he falls in love with Ember and still loves her after finding out she was the dragon he was sent to kill! It was so great.
Conclusion: This book is about thinking for yourself and not taking things at face value. It is about growing up in a world where everything is decided for you and questioning it to the point where you find the truth. It’s also about dragons that can take human form! Who doesn’t love a good dragon book? I think Julie Kagawa has done it again. She has opened my eyes to a whole new world and I love ever second of it! Don’t let the negative reviews keep you from giving this book a try!
