(Rating is 5 nerd glasses plus a mustache because it was just too awesome for just 5 nerd glasses.)
Alex is shipped off to boarding school when her parents take a job and she can’t follow. She quickly finds out that the board school is not going to be fun and making friends is not going to be easy. She makes her way to the headmasters office dreading what is to come. Before Alex knows what is going on, she is swept away into another world with no way back to her own. But is it really so bad?
Medora is a world where magic is reality and the first two boys she stumbles across instantly become her new best friends.
This book captures you from the first word. Or at least, it did me. I was completely entranced the moment I started reading and couldn’t believe I waited so long to read it. I have seen the reviews saying that it’s like Harry Potter and Narnia, and it is! What they have failed to tell you is that there is a little mixture of Alice in Wonderland as well.
When Alex first lands in Medora she meets three people. The first is a strange man who quickly disappears. The next two she meets are Bear and Jordan. My first thought of these two boys were Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dumb from Alice in Wonderland. And they continue to remind me of the duo throughout the book, only they are much smarter and so much more fun to be around.
At the beginning I got a little annoyed with Alex and her constant worry to get back to her own world. Honestly, you throw me into a new world that is this amazing and it may take me at least a month before I am ready to go home. But Alex eventually gives in and has fun, taking in the new world she has been thrown into. It helps that Bear and Jordan are some of the greatest friends anyone could ever have…if there is a Bear and Jordan in the world looking for a bestie chick friend please look me up!
There is not a single bad thing I can say about his book except, I want more. I would catch myself giggling in public because of something hilarious that Bear or Jordan said, or the way Alex shows everyone up. She was made for Medora, and she quickly catches on.
I think some of my favorite parts were when Alex was in her Combat classes. She just proves that just because she is a girl, doesn’t mean she is weak. I love how strong of a character Alex is, and I am not going to lie…I started focusing more on my own fitness and strength because of Alex.
If I can please call it, I think there might be a little love story developing between Alex and Kaiden. While I was super excited that Alex didn’t instantly fall in love with Bear or Jordan or any other guy for that matter, in the next book I would like to see her have a little romance. That being said, I was relieved to have a book that didn’t linger on teenage romance and just stuck to the basics of entering a new life with new friends.
The last thing I have to say about Akarnae is that the cover is so beautiful. It captures the magic of the story and if I had seen this sitting on the shelf at the book store, I would not have hesitated to pick it up and add it to my collection.
If you have not read this book yet, I encourage you to get it today. It was an amazing story that I could not put down. I was so lost in thought of being whisked away into a new world that my day to day life just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Somehow this book has convinced me to become a better me. I cannot wait to see what comes next from the world of Medora and out of the mind of this amazing new author!
