It is that time again. The time of the week where I share a short story. To refresh your memory, at the beginning of the month I draw a prompt out of my handy dandy vase. I then use that prompt to write one short story a week for a month. Every story will be different but it all has to do with the prompt. This is to challenge my own mind and to build my own writing skill.
Alice walked into the gym, it was her first time ever going into the gym. Her mother told her she needed to lose a little weight and bought her a year at a gym. Her mom was always hard on her, she expected that from her. What Alice didn’t expect was her boyfriend agreeing with her mom and paying half of the gym membership. Needless to say, he was now an ex.
“Hi, welcome to the Cocoon.” The skinny, cheerful lady said from behind the counter. Her name plate said her name was Pearl. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
“I have this.” Alice said, showing the woman the gift card.
“That’s great! What a wonderful gift to be given.” Pearl said. Alice wanted to punch her for being so chipper.
“Unless it’s from your boyfriend.” Alice mumbled.
“Oh my, what a wretched thing to do.” Pearl said, dropping her smile. “Did you dump him?” She asked. Alice nodded. “Good for you, girl.”
“It doesn’t feel good.” Alice said. “If he couldn’t love me, who will.”
“Your weight is not the issue. It’s all him.” She ran the gift card and smiled. “I have a solution. Lucky for you, this membership comes with a personal trainer. I know just who you need to work with.” Alice watched Pearl walk to the back. A few minutes later she returned, behind her was a tall man with huge muscles.
“Um…” Alice said, her eyes felt like they were bulging out of her head and she could feel her face heating up. This man was like the men on the covers of fitness magazines. He was too beautiful to be true.
“Alice.” Pearl said, a smile stretched across her face. “This is Kade.”
“Hi.” Alice said, shaking Kade’s rather large hands. “I’m Alice.” She said, feeling her face turn a deeper red with embarrassment. Of course he knew her name. “I mean, nice to meet you.”
“The pleasure is all mine.” Kade said, his smile spreading across his face and revealing his perfect white teeth. Alice was suddenly even more conscious of her weight. She zipped up her jacket and crossed her arms over her stomach.
“Alice, Kade knows your situation and what brings you here today. We have a plan.” Pearl saved Alice from embarrassing herself any further.
“What?” Alice stared at Pearl and looked back to Kade. His bright green eyes had not left her and it made Alice twitch.
“We are going to help you lose weight, tone you up, and show you off to the world.” Kade said, rubbing his hands together. “There is only one question I have to ask you.”
Alice stared at the tall man with the long blond hair. “Okay.” She said, trying to clear her mind.
“Are you ready to work that butt off?” Kade asked her. “Are you ready to show the world that you can work just as hard as everyone else?”
“Are you ready to show that ex of yours what he is really missing out on?”
“Yes.” Alice said quickly. “But losing weight is exactly what he wanted me to do.”
“You are beautiful.” Kade said, causing Alice to stop breathing. “I can see that and so can Pearl here. It’s not in the way you look, but how you carry yourself. What I am going to do is bring that beauty in you out, so the blind people can see it too.”
“Do you want to lose weight, Alice?” Pearl asked.
“Yes.” Alice said. She had always wanted to lose weight, but she didn’t know where to start.
“We are going to help you. We are going to make you look the way you feel inside. In the end, you and I will probably become best friends.” Pearl said. Alice laughed but stopped when she realized Pearl was serious.
“Alice,” Kade said. “This is the beginning of a beautiful life. One where you will feel as great as you look. Your confidence will be out of this world and no one will stop you. You will cause men to stumble everywhere. All the men will want to be with you and all the women will want to be you.”
“If you say so.” Alice said, doubting the power of the two people in front of her. She didn’t know what she had stepped into and she was starting to think these people were a little crazy.
“We are all mad here.” Kade said, winking at Alice.
“Mad about fitness and the revenge that comes when we show that ex how awesome you are.” Pearl said, clapping her hands.
“But he won’t be able to have you, because you will have already fallen in love with a worthy guy.”
“What is going on here?” Alice asked. She felt like she had fallen down a rabbit hole. Nothing made sense to her.
“A wonderful, crazy, beautiful life.” Pearl said. “Things are not what they used to be.”
“So, um…” Alice looked at the two people in front of her. “Do we start now?”
“Yes!” Kade said, pulling Alice along with him.
An hour later Alice slumped to the floor, exhausted but thrilled. It was like she could feel the fat burning away. Kade had not let up on her, he wouldn’t let her stop for nothing. He sat down beside her and handed her a water bottle. “Drink a lot of water. Nothing but water.” He said, smiling at her. “You have done good today.”
“Thanks.” Alice said between chugs of water. “How often do we do this?”
“Everyday.” Kade said, laughing when Alice looked at him in horror. “It will get easier, I promise.”
“I guess getting to see your gorgeous face every day is incentive enough to come in everyday.” Alice choked on her water when she realized what she had said. “Dear god, I am so sorry.” Her face felt hot and it wasn’t from the work out.
“It’s okay.” Kade said, smiling at her. “I think it will be nice to see you every day as well.” He nudged her and lifted himself off the floor, offering a hand to Alice.
“Tomorrow then.” Alice said.
“Tomorrow.” Kade answered.
That night Alice polished off the last cream puff, by throwing it into the trash. She wiped her face, making sure it was clean of her healthy dinner of fish and broccoli. She always said she would start her new diet tomorrow, but today…today she started a new diet. Tomorrow she would see Kade again. She could have read into it wrong, but she felt like Kade liked her. She knew her own feelings about Kade. He was everything she could ever dream about a man. Everything her ex wasn’t. Even if it was all for show, she didn’t mind because it made her feel good about herself.
The Cocoon wasn’t a gym. It was a whole new and magical world. One where anything was possible.
