Pin It Saturday: Her Shoulders Slumped Forward

Another Pin It Saturday is upon us. Yay!! I really hope that someone out there enjoys them. Of course, it’s only the second. Once I get through all the writing topics I will move on to other topics within my Pinterest universe. It’s a universe!

Today I wanted to talk about body language. Looking back at my first book I notice that there is a huge lack in body language. I try, and you can see where I try. There is an eyebrow raise, crossing of arms, gaping mouths, and stomping teenagers. It’s all good stuff, really, but too much of a good thing can be bad. I tend to use the same thing over and over again, just because I have so much trouble writing about body language.

Lucky for me there is a wonderful article that kind of helps lay it out for me. Well, reminds me of things I should be looking for in my characters.

This article HERE talks about ways to communicate body language. Places where you can put in body language that you may have not considered before. I try and point out body language in the books that I read, just to help myself find new ways to express it. Also, let’s not forget, “Show don’t tell.”

I will be adding quirks to my character sheets for all my characters. I want them all to have at least one quirk, like raking a hand through their hair when they are nervous. Flicking their finger when they are telling a lie. Putting their hands on their hips when they are impatiently waiting. Or…jiggling their foot when they are anxious. So many types of body language.

It wold be great practice to watch people as well. I know that when I talk to a cute guy I play with my hair, just to have something to do with my hands. I realize how high school that is, but what do you expect from the girl who has never dated? When I talk to my mom I am overly expressive. My hands are all over the place! Seriously, go to Starbucks, grab you a drink, and people watch. It’s great fun, just don’t get caught staring at people.

Tell me, what are your quirks? And what are some body language type quirks that your characters have?
