Does It Count?

I have never listened to an audio book before. I have always dismissed it as pointless and useless. I would scoff at people who said they listened to books all the time. I felt like the magic of a book was lost in translation if you didn’t see and read the words yourself.

Last night I was going into work and I decided I needed to give it a try. My mom used to always tell me “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it” any time she wanted me to try something new. I don’t know why, but those words have always stuck with me and I realized that I was knocking something I had never given a chance.

I downloaded audible, signed up for my 30 day free trial and downloaded a book called The Iron King.

I have been wanting to read this book for a while now. I fell in love with the artwork of the covers, so it was the perfect time and the perfect way to try out audio books. I was a little skeptical going into this. I thought I would hear the words and never remember the story. I thought I would miss things because I would stop paying attention. I thought I would get bored and turn it off before the night was over.

I am here to say, I was 100% wrong. So far, this book is amazing and I am in love. Not just with the book but audio books. I was reading a book while working and I wasn’t missing a thing. I heard every word, saw every detail, and caught every flaw of the characters. It was almost better than reading. I say almost because there were a few times I wanted to look down at the words but I couldn’t.

I missed reading the words, but it made my night at work go so much faster and it was so much more enjoyable. Instead of putting up gift boxes I was dancing with fairies and running through the woods. I was going to magical portals and dealing with changelings. It was amazing. A regular boring night turned into a fantastical night full of mystery and fights.

As some of you know, at the beginning of the year I set a goal to read 50 books. I didn’t quite make it. I found myself in moments where I was just too depressed to read, or had my nose in the TV. Or sleeping, because I did a lot of sleeping this year. I was short by about 10 books, if that much. But I am setting the same goal for 2015 and I am going to add audio books to my list.

Now, I debated over this all last night. Does an audio book count as a book I read? I think it does. I am still exploring a new world, hearing new words, going on a new adventure. My mind is still creating images before my eyes of the things in the book. I think it is all the same, I have read a book.

Don’t worry though, I will still read books the old fashioned way. Book in hand, laying in bed and forgetting that I should be getting sleep. I will never be able to stop the habit of enjoying the sound of a turning page or watching the words turn into the characters. But if I can “read” a book while I am at work and making money…can life get any better?

What is your opinion? Do you consider audio books as reading a book, or just another form of entertainment?
